A Local Guide Dedicated to the Bitterroot River

If you're planning a fly fishing trip to Montana's Bitterroot Valley, chances are you’ll hear the name Tyson Sugihara.

Tyson is the owner of Lightweight Fly Shop in Stevensville, Montana, and a professional fly fishing guide who spends hundreds of days on the water helping anglers experience the Bitterroot River.

From early-season Skwala stoneflies to summer dry-fly fishing and fall streamer action, Tyson guides anglers through every season the Bitterroot has to offer.

His goal is simple: help people fish better, understand the river, and leave with stories they’ll be telling for years.

Whether you're new to fly fishing or a seasoned angler visiting Montana, Tyson’s local knowledge makes the Bitterroot River far more approachable.

My Story: How the Bitterroot River Became Home

My name is Tyson Sugihara, and fly fishing has been a huge part of my life for decades.

I’m a professional fly fishing guide, business owner, and lifelong outdoor enthusiast, and I’ve spent countless days exploring the rivers of Western Montana.

Eventually, the Bitterroot River became the place I kept coming back to.

There’s something special about this river. It’s technical enough to challenge experienced anglers, but forgiving enough for beginners to learn.

After years of fishing across Montana, I built Lightweight Fly Shop in Stevensville (Stevensville, Montana, sits along the Bitterroot River in western Montana)to create a place where anglers could get honest local advice, quality gear, and access to guided trips on the Bitterroot.

These days, I split my time between:

  • Running Lightweight Fly Shop

  • Guiding fly fishing trips on the Bitterroot River

  • Helping anglers learn the river through reports, resources, and local insight

And yes… I still get just as excited about a good hatch as I did when I started.

Outside of guiding, Tyson has spent much of his life chasing adventure. With over 6,000 skydives, a pilot’s license, and a background in photography, he brings the same attention to detail and love for wild places to his time on the Bitterroot River.

Why I Guide the Bitterroot River

Montana has many incredible trout rivers.

But the Bitterroot River is different.

It’s one of the most diverse trout fisheries in the state, offering:

  • Early spring Skwala stonefly hatches

  • Strong summer dry-fly fishing

  • Excellent nymphing throughout the season

  • Aggressive fall streamer fishing

  • Stunning scenery in the Bitterroot Valley

The river flows right through the heart of western Montana and sits within reach of towns like Stevensville, Hamilton, and Missoula.

But what makes it special isn’t just the fishing.

It’s the rhythm of the river.

The Bitterroot changes constantly. Water levels shift, hatches evolve, and trout behavior adapts through the seasons. Learning those patterns takes time, and that’s exactly what guiding allows me to share.

Local Knowledge of the Bitterroot River

Guiding the Bitterroot River requires understanding seasonal changes, river flows, and insect hatches. Throughout the year Tyson helps anglers target wild rainbow trout, brown trout, and native cutthroat trout using techniques that match the river’s conditions.

The Bitterroot River is known for its Skwala stonefly hatch in early spring, strong summer dry fly fishing, and excellent fall streamer opportunities.

Knowing the Right Water

I’ve learned how trout use the Bitterroot’s structure:

  • Soft seams along inside bends

  • Buckets below boulders and structure

  • Slow winter holding water

  • Productive dry-fly banks in summer

Finding fish isn’t random. It’s about reading the river.

Choosing the Right Flies

Local patterns matter.

Some of the most productive Bitterroot flies include:

  • Skwala Stonefly patterns (spring)

  • Purple Haze

  • Parachute Adams

  • Zebra Midges

  • Perdigons

  • Streamers during fall and higher water

Inside Lightweight Fly Shop, we stock the same flies we fish every day on the river.

My Philosophy as a Fly Fishing Guide

Guiding isn’t just about rowing a boat and pointing at fish.

A good day on the water means helping anglers understand the river, not just catch trout.

My guiding approach focuses on:

  • Teaching anglers how to read water

  • Improving casting and presentation

  • Explaining insect hatches and trout behavior

  • Creating a relaxed, fun day on the river

Some clients want instruction. Others just want to fish.

Both are perfectly fine.

The goal is always the same:
leave the river a better angler than when you arrived.
