River Info - Clark Fork River

About the Clark Fork River

The Clark Fork is Montana’s largest river by volume and offers anglers a diverse mix of fishing opportunities as it flows from Warm Springs through Missoula and west toward Idaho. Often overlooked in favor of flashier rivers, the Clark Fork quietly provides some of the most consistent fishing in the region.

Its size creates variety. Upstream sections offer technical water and structure, while downstream stretches open into long glides, broad riffles, and deep runs that fish well throughout the year.

Fish Species

  • Brown Trout
  • Rainbow Trout
  • Cutthroat Trout

Fishing Experience

The Clark Fork is a year-round fishery. In warmer months, hopper-dropper rigs and streamers are effective. In colder months, the river’s stable flows make it one of the better winter options in western Montana.

Because it’s a larger system, trout often hold in slower seams and soft water rather than obvious riffles. Anglers who slow down and read water carefully tend to do very well here.

Why Anglers Love It

  • Reliable fishing across seasons
  • Less pressure than more famous rivers
  • Excellent streamer and nymph water
  • Easy access near Missoula
