River Info - West Fork
About the West Fork of the Bitterroot
The West Fork of the Bitterroot River is a smaller, more intimate companion to the main Bitterroot. Flowing out of the Sapphire Mountains west of Darby, it winds through forested valleys and canyon stretches before joining the main river near Conner.
Compared to the main Bitterroot, the West Fork feels quieter and more secluded. It offers excellent wade fishing, clear water, and a strong sense of fishing a true mountain river.
Fish Species
- Westslope Cutthroat Trout
- Brown Trout
- Rainbow Trout
Fishing Experience
The West Fork is ideal for anglers who enjoy technical wade fishing. The river features riffles, pocket water, and deeper bends that reward careful presentations and stealth. Dry flies and dry-dropper rigs are very effective during summer, while nymphing and small streamers work well during spring and fall.
Because the river is smaller, it responds quickly to weather and runoff, so conditions can change fast. When it’s right, however, the West Fork can fish exceptionally well.
